The MSc Criminology at the University of Stirling does much more than simply teach theory to students. This program examines clear connections between conceptual theories of crime and justice, and thoroughly explores examples of how these impact contemporary society. The course content focuses on responses to crime through the lenses of innovation and social justice. This is applied across a wide spectrum from crimes in the street or at home, to crimes of the powerful, crimes across borders, as well as more recent issues of online crime and the drug problem. The program stresses a strong critical understanding of how research is framed, used and developed. This curriculum is delivered via modules in data analysis and research design, and also encompasses criminological and socio-legal research methods. Students have the opportunity to explore concepts of criminal justice, the social contexts of crime, and a variety of criminological theoretical perspectives as well as applied insights.
This flexible program also offers specialist modules in several areas which include:
- rehabilitation and criminal justice work
- drug policy and interventions
- criminalisation, social control and human rights
This program is geared towards current practitioners who would like to increase their skills and knowledge through a Masters qualification, or for students who wish to continue their undergraduate studies at a postgraduate level in Scotland.
