The University of Strathclyde has been training forensic scientists for more than half a century. The focal point of this well-respected program is a major crime scene exercise. This involves investigating simulated outdoor crime scenes, collecting and analysing the evidence, and then presenting it in Glasgow Sheriff Court in conjunction with students training in Strathclyde Law School.
Forensic students get a solid foundation of knowledge in a number of important areas including the following:
- preservation and recovery of evidence at a crime scene
- assessment and analysis of a wide range of evidence types
- legal systems, and ethical considerations relating to forensic science
- the interpretation, statistical evaluation, and reporting of evidence
After the general courses in Semester 1, students may specialise in either forensic biology or forensic chemistry. Forensic biology involves the investigation of assaults and sexual offences, biological trace evidence, and DNA profiling. Graduates from Strathclyde’s Forensic Sciences program hold important positions in this field world-wide.
