Do you already work as an artist, or have you studied Art History at the undergraduate level? Would you like to further your skills and knowledge to become part of a thriving academic community? The Department of History of Art at the University of Bristol offers a broad-based master’s program, which allows you the ability to tailor parts of the program to explore your own interests. The Faculty members in this department are all experts in their fields which means you can draw on their expertise to explore medieval, renaissance and modern art.

Students in this postgraduate program will gain a solid understanding of the main strands of art history, as they related to both Europe and North America. Added learning is done through curatorial units in collaboration with external museum partners. This allows you to research and catalogue museum collections and to mount exhibitions.

Our students are drawn from a variety of backgrounds. Some have undergraduate degrees in art history, others do not, and some are working artists. Studying for this MA is a chance to become part of a thriving academic community, with a sizeable and close-knit student body and a lively array of research and social events.

Full time students in this program study two core units and then select four optional units during the school year. The research component of the program is written over the summer and is submitted in September.
